The schedule was switched every other day between work for the company and research into Sebastian's condition. There were a few more days where Ciel woke up by himself, but Sebastian had already prepared for the possibility and had breakfast waiting on the dining room table. Finally, the letter they had been waiting for came and Sebastian gave it to Ciel with his afternoon tea. The Queen's seal was clear in the red wax that was quickly pulled off and the letter inside read eagerly. When finished, Ciel laid it on the desk and smiled. It was odd to see an honestly happy smile from his master, but it did make Sebastian more at ease with the situation. His master looked at him and said appreciatively, "congratulations Sebastian. Your plight has just caught the attention of the Queen. She wants us to find any way possible to end the horrid disappearances around London." The boy then jumped from his chair and looked up at Sebastian with curiosity, "You know, considering what Grell said, I'm surprised you haven't been cured by now. Surely you've come across a few pure virgins while prowling around." The butler smiled gently and explained, "I'm afraid that is not the real problem, young master. Though they are rare, I have seen quite a few of them around, but it is that same purity that makes them…least likely for my feral self to desire." Surprised, Ciel stated earnestly, "I thought for certain they'd be the most desireable. After all, wouldn't it be the greatest conquest for one of your kind to take someone who would otherwise be destined for heaven or whatever?" Sebastian got down to his master's level and said, "Well, yes and no. You see, the way it works is that we actually prefer those with the dirtiest, most stained souls. If we manage to get a pure soul…it is not only very disgusting to the taste, but quite harmful to us physically. It takes several days to recover from those kinds of internal burns." It pleased him to see that look of concentration on Ciel's face, seeing the boy trying so hard to take in all the things he'd just said and use them. If he'd been in less control of himself, Sebastian would have ruffled his hair as he would to the fur of a particularly adorable kitten, but he prided himself on his control of such impulses. Instead, he stood and said, "I must return to my duties now, Bocchan. You should return to your work." Ciel watched him go and returned to his desk, now pouring over the various tomes of demonology scattered on its surface.
They were on the town that night, now authorized to view the "crime" scenes by their letter from the queen. Ciel noticed that these episodes were not nearly as damaging to the property as the fight with Pluto had been, but he attributed this to the fact that Pluto was inhumanly strong since he was actually a giant dog that could breathe fire. As they went to the last scene in the dark of the night, Sebastian suddenly threw himself over Ciel and made both of them crash to the cobblestones. Utterly flustered and embarrassed, Ciel started to struggle under his butler's weight as he vented, "What on earth was that about?! Are you insane, Sebastian?" There was no reply except for the butler pointing at the wall they had been walking beside. It now had a large rod embedded in a crater the size of a man's head sticking out of it, but the rod and the hedge clippers on the end were soon retracted to a nearby roof as a voice said, "It would be more prudent of you to simply stand still and take your punishment, Sebastian Michaelis." Brushing himself off, Sebastian replied, "I refuse to cooperate with anything you do, Mr. Spears. Besides, if I had not acted as I did, you would have killed my master." Atop the roof stood a very stern looking young man in a suit, his rectangular glasses shining in the moonlight as he adjusted them with the clippers. After a moment of Sebastian exchanging hateful glares with him, the man jumped down to the street and took a new position, standing very primly as he held his hands behind his back, "Point taken. Now, boy, are you or are you not going to step out of the way so that I may administer his punishment?" Ciel was angry now that this stranger had dared attack him or his butler, and gritted his teeth as he said, "No, I will not. You have no right to come in here and attack us for no reason, especially when we don't know who you even are!" Sebastian whirled around and stared in shock at his master, the sheer amount of his memory loss was staggering. The man in the glasses also seemed to be surprised, his gold eyes opening wide and his mouth opening for a split second before he recomposed himself and said, "Ahem, you have obviously been through a lot since that night, so I will introduce myself again. I am William T. Spears, management level shinigami in charge of this area. Your, ah, "butler" has been feasting on souls which he has no claim to and is therefore eligible for destruction. Seeing as he is in my jurisdiction and I made the extreme error of allowing him free reign until now, I am here to administer said punishment. Are you going to cooperate?" Ciel looked at Sebastian, who had become calm once again, and then at William as he said, "No, I will not." Suddenly there was a loud grinding noise and another, feminine voice shouted, "Neither will I, my sweet William!" Grell shot out of an alleyway and landed gracefully next to Sebastian, saying with a flourish of his hand, "I will not allow you to touch one hair on my darling Sebby's head!" though thoroughly sickened by the display, it gave Sebastian enough time to grab Ciel and take both of them away. Noticing their escape, William said icily, "Grell Sutcliff, you will be in serious trouble for this." His good mood  dampened slightly, Grell mustered the retort, "Who cares? I will gladly sacrifice myself for the man I love! People will call me a heroine!" Suddenly, he was smacked over the head with a blue lawnmower and fell flat on his face. A blonde boy behind him adjusted his glasses and said happily, "Sorry, Sutcliff-sempai, but I think you might be ON heroine. Did I do it right, sir?" William sighed and pulled Grell up by his hair as he said, "Yes, Mr. Knox, but a little too late. You were supposed to hit the butler, not Grell." The three shinigamis then vanished into the night while their quarry hurried off into the night.
Now the grunt work begins. What will a visit to the scenes reveal?
